GROOMING SERVICES
How Long Does Dog Grooming Take?
A 3 to 4 hour grooming appointment sounds long if you are picturing only the haircut, especially when your own haircut may take less than an hour. The difference is that your dog’s appointment also includes check-in, bathing, drying, coat preparation, the grooming work itself, and breaks when the dog needs them.
At The PawPlex in Suwanee, it is better to plan around a half-day window than a precise pickup time. We call or text when your dog is finished, and you have until closing to pick up.
Quick Answer
Most grooming appointments take about 3 to 4 hours from drop-off to pickup. Coat type, size, matting, temperament, service type, and add-on coat work can move an appointment toward the shorter or longer end of that window.
Why does grooming take several hours?
The haircut is only one stage of the appointment, and for many dogs it is not the longest stage. The coat has to be fully cleaned, rinsed, dried, brushed, and prepared before the finished grooming work can look even and hold up well after your dog goes home.
Dogs also get pauses when they need them instead of being moved from one stage to the next without a break. That extra time is especially useful for puppies, seniors, nervous dogs, and dogs with thick coats that take longer to dry.
What happens during those 3 to 4 hours?
- Check-in and coat assessment, where the groomer confirms the service, haircut goals, coat condition, and anything you want them to know about your dog.
- Bathing and rinsing, with enough time to clean the coat thoroughly instead of rushing through the part that makes the rest of the groom possible.
- Drying and coat preparation, which can take a large share of the appointment for curly, long, thick, or double coats.
- The booked grooming work, which may be a basic brush-out, a Mini Groom tidy, a Full Groom haircut, or extra coat work such as de-shedding or de-matting.
- A final check, any needed finishing work, and a call or text to let you know your dog is ready.
What makes one grooming appointment take longer than another?
Size matters because a larger dog has more coat to wash, dry, brush, and trim, but coat condition often matters just as much. Matting, a packed undercoat, or a coat that has gone much longer than usual between appointments can add significant hands-on time.
Temperament also affects the pace because a dog who needs breaks should get them. A nervous or wiggly dog may be perfectly groomable, but the appointment can take longer when the groomer works in shorter stretches instead of forcing the dog to stand still for one long session.
Service choice changes the timing as well. A Bath is usually shorter than a Full Groom, while de-shedding and de-matting add time because the coat needs more work than a standard appointment includes.
Can I do anything to make grooming faster?
You cannot change your dog’s size or coat type, but you can make coat condition easier to work with. Regular brushing that reaches the skin, especially in the common matting areas, usually means less time spent undoing tangles before the actual grooming can begin.
Staying on a regular 4 to 8 week grooming schedule also keeps appointments more predictable. A coat that comes in routinely is generally easier to clean and shape than the same coat after several months of extra growth and tangling.
Do I need to wait nearby during the appointment?
You do not need to sit in the parking lot or keep checking the time. Go to work, run errands, or head home, and we will call or text as soon as your dog is finished.
There is no one-hour pickup requirement after that call, and you can pick up any time before closing. If your schedule changes late in the day, a quick call to the front desk helps the team know what to expect.
How should I plan grooming day?
Treat the appointment as a 3 to 4 hour window rather than a fixed haircut time, and avoid scheduling something that depends on your dog being ready at an exact minute. If the grooming window is difficult to fit into your day, ask about Tail Waggin’ Transit when you book.
